We’re excited to announce COCA 16515, a vocabulary learning app designed to help learners master the 16,515 most frequent English words from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Built from my own experience preparing for IELTS and Canadian PR, this app turns a huge word list into a fun, structured learning journey.

Inspiration

While preparing for IELTS, I realized that studying random word lists was ineffective. Frequency-based, context-rich vocabulary like COCA with clear definitions, examples, and pronunciation makes a huge difference. COCA 16515 is designed to help others learn smarter and track progress.

How we built it

  • Web-based platform using Next.js, TypeScript, and TailwindCSS.
  • Flashcards, quiz module, and word browser for interactive learning.
  • Dynamic learning flow prioritizing challenging words.

Challenges

  • Structuring a large dataset of 16,515 words for interactive study.
  • Designing a clean, motivating dashboard.
  • Handling bilingual content without clutter.
  • Maintaining learner engagement.

Accomplishments

  • Integrated full COCA word list with definitions, examples, and pronunciation.
  • Created bilingual, context-rich interface and progress tracking system.
  • Turned personal IELTS experience into a scalable tool for learners.

What's Next

  • Adaptive learning algorithms to prioritize challenging words.
  • Spaced repetition and smart quizzes for faster mastery.
  • Expand bilingual support beyond Chinese–English.
  • Mobile enhancements for learning anytime, anywhere.
